GARY, INDIANA..........YOU ARE A WINNER!!!!!!!...................The Steelheads won their sixth straight on Saturday night with a thrilling win over the LA Lightning in Los Angeles........The next Steelheads home game will be May 17th against defending IBL league champion Elkhart Express...........................and don't forget that Gary and the Genesis Convention Center will host the IBL's All-Star Game June 12.............All-Star festivities begin at 6 PM.

Hello!  My name is Steelie. You surely know me from visiting my natural habitat – the Genesis Convention Center – where I am at all Steelheads home games. You don’t have to catch me – I’ll come right over and pay you a visit while you are cheering on your favorite basketball team – the Steelheads.

I was born on Feb. 18, 2000 – the same day the Steelheads’ basketball team was born. I started my life as a little guppy in a stream, but like all steelheads, but I headed to the Great Lakes and Lake Michigan . Yes, I was a little guy in the Marquette Park Lagoon and worked my way over to Marquette Beach . Now I reside in the Genesis Center , but I am very migratory. You see me all over the Calumet Region whether it is at parades, festivals or birthday parties. I even go out on boats, but not to fish.

But my favorite place is my own fish tank – the Genesis Convention Center – and being with the fans. I love the young fans and you boys and girls like coming to the games and cheering loud. Don’t worry, you won’t hurt ole’ Steelie’s ears. The louder you are the better, because my good friend Coach Levingston and the team love it.

I am in every nook and cranny in the arena. I may come sit down with you for awhile. You know I love the fans because you are so friendly to me and the whole organization knows just how very important you are to our team. I may be leading the cheers with the Sweethearts, our great cheer and dance squad. I even help out with the pre-game introduction of our Steelheads.

I have grown up with this team from Day One. Two summers ago I really hit the weights and started working out. You saw how much I bulked up last season. I worked out harder this summer at Marquette Beach . In fact, I swam everyday from Wilhalia Beach in Whiting, all the way to West Beach . Along the way, I waved at all the Steelheads’ fans out on

Lake St., Marquette

and my favorite –

Wells St.

beaches. I also did a lot of walking in parades and that helped burn off all the calories from the great ethnic food I ate at all the various ethnic festivals that Northwest Indiana offers. The Steelheads’ front office and I logged a lot of miles and we must have been in front of over 100,000 people.

I love being a part of the communities that make up Northwest Indiana or “Da Region” as we are known. I visit schools (how about a school of fish?), hospitals, clubs and just about every place that the Steelheads’ players, the Sweethearts and the front office visit.

That’s why I like lots of people coming to the games and cheering me on. I even put a referee’s shirt on a few times when you told me that you didn’t like the calls on the court. I like the referees too and I visit with them.

We are here to make your game-night experience a fun one. We are top-notch entertainment at rock-bottom prices. I am happy to a part of your experience. And don’t forget, just call the Steelheads’ office at (219) 883-3000 to arrange to have me come visit your school or to make an appearance.  Go Steelheads!

Best Wishes,

Steelie

Steelie is one fish that gives you a warm feeling.  The Steelheads mascot entertains at games and at various events around Northwest Indiana .  He is not only a favorite of young Steelhead fans, but even mom and dad enjoy watching Steelie perform and show off his "basketball and dunking" skills.  He entertains at every home game and is available for appearances at schools or private functions.
